Portugal's gastronomy is as rich and varied as its landscape. The sea is the most outstanding feature of Portuguese cuisine. Dishes vary from simple grilled fish seasoned with olive oil, to the seafood that abounds all along the coast, always fresh and of the best quality.
Some examples include the eels in the Aveiro region in the Center of Portugal or the grilled sardines particularly eaten during the Popular Saints festivities in Lisbon in the month of June. In Algarve, clams, oysters and cockles cooked on a griddle or in a frying pan are delicious, while the islands of Madeira and Azores offer different options such as black scabbard fish fillets, tuna steak and octopus.
In meat dishes, a suggestion for the whole country: the cocido a la portuguesa, a mixture of meats, vegetables and various sausages, cooked in a succulent way. From the north to the south of Portugal, there are excellent Protected Denomination of Origin (DOP) meats, whether beef, pork or kid, and fruits and vegetables from organic producers. When it comes to cheese, it is enough to mention Serra, creamy, unctuous or dry, goat and sheep cheeses, but all the cheeses from Central Portugal, Alentejo or the Azores are delicious too.
